Top NY-LA Celebrity Makeup Artist and Eyebrow Specialist, Elke Von Freudenberg shares her expert tips on how to get your bridal brows looking model perfect for the big day. To get brows looking perfect, don’t feel you need to grow in your eyebrows for 2-3 months before you can even make an appointment. “Growth for that length of time usually ends up with overgrown eyebrows in places you really don’t need anyway.” States Elke Von Freudenberg. Two to three weeks is usually enough time to reshape a brow. If you’re looking to to grow very thin eyebrows thicker, then expect at least a good 3-4 months time for your brows to fill in. “One to two appointments is all that’s needed to get your brows model perfect for the wedding day,” says Elke. ”The first appointment should be 1 month before your wedding, and the 2nd, as close to the wedding day as possible, at the least, 1 day before.”

Elke also offers these top makeup tips to get bridal gorgeous for the wedding photos:
1. Avoid looking too trendy in your wedding photos.
2. Avoid very thin, too sharply arched, or a rounded shaped brows. This can look very dated in the wedding photos, much like a too trendy hairstyle.
3. Keep the brow shape classic, and as close to your natural growth pattern as possible to create a classic, yet elegant look on your wedding day.

To tweeze or wax? That depends on the type of hair you have. Elke claims that thicker hair responds better to waxing, while thinner, lighter hair likes tweezing because you can keep it’s shape without worrying about hairs not growing back. She recommends waxing for the bride at least a week before the wedding date, and then a light tweezing, 1-2 days before the wedding day for picture perfect brows.

For made up brows, avoid a brow color that is very dark, or heavy. Go with a brow shade that’s 1-2 shades lighter than your hair color, to create a perfect match. “I’ve always felt that the goal of great eyebrows is to have people look at your eyes, not your eyebrows.” claims Elke. For a softer brow, apply brow shadow, and then lightly brush through with a toothbrush, or brow brush to soften and blend the color, a step that is often overlooked. Avoid a very shiny or glittery brow highlight for those wedding photos. Flash photography can create a glare effect in the photos, and while it looks pretty in person, apply a brow highlight that has more of a soft shimmer, than a strong frost to compliment and bring out the brow shape. 1. The round eyebrow.

Or called, “the happy eyebrow”. It borders on an almost 1/2 circle shape. This happens when the tweezer keeps trying to create more of an arch, but is not sure where it is. So they keep tweezing from underneath the eyebrow in the wrong place, creating a 1/2 circle.

2. The arch in the wrong place

Or, in most cases, the arch is too far out. This happens when the arch is created by a pencil lining up to the side of the nose to the outside iris of the eye. What happens is that the eyes actually end up looking crossed eyed (especially in photos) and too close together.

3. The straight eyebrow.

A straight eyebrow is when the arch of the eyebrow either never existed, (rare) or tweezing happened too much on the top of the eyebrow, which takes away the arch and straightens the eyebrow.

4. Using stencils to create your eyebrow shape.

You really can’t do a cookie cutter approach to shaping and drawing on eyebrows. Why? Because everyone’s bone structure and eye shape is different, and your eyebrow shape really has to do with the bone that’s underneath the brow. That determines the eyebrow hairs and shape that are uniquely yours.

5. Super cut or trimmed eyebrows.

The super cut eyebrow looks good for one day and then as it grows in, looks horrible. What happens next? You cut them again only to repeat the vicious cycle. The super cut eyebrows are cut way too short and trimmed the wrong way.

Star makeup artist, Elke Von Freudenberg will be the first to tell you that eyebrows can make or break a model’s career. She should know. She’s worked on some of the top models for major modeling agencies in New York and Los Angeles such as Elite, Next, Wilhelmina and Ford, and perfect eyebrows are key, especially when designing a look for a new model.

“The first things I see in eyebrows gone bad are two things. Eyebrows that look like a straight line and eyebrows that are not balanced in their shape, as in too thick in the front and too thin at the end.” Elke offers her expert techniques to creating the perfect ‘model eyebrow’.

1. “Everyone understands where the eyebrow starts, but not where it ends. Line up a pencil at the end of the nose, towards the corner of the eye. That’s where the line of your eyebrow should end. This is also where your eyeshadow should end as well.”

2. “Balance to the eyebrows are very important. You want to make sure that they’re not uneven. From where it starts to where it ends, the line of the eyebrow should be horizontal. If you line up a pencil at the beginning and the end of the brow lines up too high, you know you’ve tweezed too much.”

3. “The ‘Model Eyebrow’ is a shape that looks great on everyone. From the start of the eyebrow to the arch, the line is straight. From the arch to the end of the eyebrow, the line is softly curved. It’s a classic eyebrow shape that’s always in and looks great on everyone.”

4. “Avoid creating a straightness in your eyebrows by not tweezing above the eyebrow. By tweezing on top, you tend to flatten the shape, making it very difficult to create a high flowing arch. You get your arch only by tweezing underneath, never on top.”

5. “If you are getting that pinching ouch when tweezing, do what the pros do. Grab the hair with tweezers and pull the hair with the tips of the tweezer touching the skin as you pull. Pull in the direction that the hair grows, and you’ll find tweezing to be virtually painless. Why? It’s the pulling up of the skin that hurts, not the hair. By keeping the skin flat, you eliminate much of the sting factor.”

6. “If you find yourself breaking out after tweezing your eyebrows, keep it sanitized. Use witch hazel on a cotton ball before and after you tweeze to avoid those little red bumps.”

7. “Ideally, the best shape is the natural line that your eyebrow already is. If your eyebrows are extremely thick, a very thin eyebrow will not work for you. If your eyebrows are thin, trying to maintain a thicker eyebrow will be too much work. Just as in hair texture, work with what you have. Softer facial features enhance a thinner, more elegant eyebrow, while a strong bone structure is the perfect face for a thicker, stronger eyebrow.”

8. “The secret to model eyebrows, is to never completely wax your eyebrow. Models know that eyebrow looks come and go, and if you wax only, you lose the ability to grow in your eyebrows at a later date should you want to change your look. The best technique is to just wax the hairs that are not neededm and tweeze to define the shape of the eyebrow.”
